Call of Cthulhu and Miniatures

With any luck, I will be running a Call of Cthulhu game around Halloween. It’s something I used to try to do every Halloween. I haven’t run a Halloween game in years unfortunately, but I have been recently getting back into the RPG game, so I thought I would give it a shot again. I’m meeting new people, and I consider it my mission to introduce them to CoC.

Many years ago, I actually ran a small weekly CoC campaign with two players for a couple months and we had a blast. Though I wouldn’t say we played with as significant a level of seriousness that people might expect from a game of CoC. Either way, it was definitely a learning experience for me and I plan to use that in getting ready for this year’s game. With any luck, I might be able to turn it into a regular thing (maybe monthly?) but I’m not going to set my expectations that high. The key is to have some fun. And in that vein, I am going to try something new with this game: minis!

That’s right, Call of Cthulhu played with miniatures. I know people do it. I haven’t tried myself, but over the last few years (especially gaming with my friend, Joel), the value of playing RPGs with miniatures has really sunk in for me. Besides, I’ve played plenty of miniature wargames, so it’s not entirely unusual territory for me.

Anyways, the plan is to acquire appropriate miniatures for the PCs and NPCs relatively soon so I can have enough time to clean and paint them decently enough (for me, at least). This is, of course, all hanging on the response I get from the folks I’ve invited to play. I’ve got the miniatures I would order just about picked out. It helps that the scenario I’ll be running calls for fairly specific types of characters (namely, FBI agents).

Here are the minis I’ve narrowed it down to. First there are the Professionals from Foundry’s Street Violence line. Next are the Men in Black from Copplestone’s Future Wars line.

Foundry Street Violence Professionals

Copplestone Future Wars MiB

I’m leaning more towards the first set, as I think the poses look a bit more dynamic, but I may just end up getting both sets anyway and using one for PCs and one for NPC agents, since I have to get some minis for them as well. I still have to pick out some minis for non-FBI NPCs and I’ve found some fairly cheap terrain that would look nice for the game. I’ll also need to pick up some other things (some felt for the ground, for example) and build other important terrain bits for the scenario.

Luckily, all I want and much much more is available from the War Store, and I have heard nothing but good things about the folks running that place, so they will be getting an order from me in the not too distant future if I get the level of interest needed from the folks I’ve invited.
